June 8, 2020

At the end of February 2020, the European Commission launched its digital strategy and announced that a legislative proposal known as the ‘Digital Services Act’ would be launched. According to the Commission, a ‘new digital services act will upgrade our liability and safety rules for digital platforms, services and productions, and complete our digital single market’.

The DSA now has the potential to be the most far-reaching piece of legislation regulating online platforms. The new act, which is expected for Q4 2020/Q1 2021, is intended to serve as a basis for the refit of the eCommerce Directive, the current legislation setting out how platforms should be regulated online, and introduce new rules on platforms.
